USCIS has announced the extension and redesignation of Haiti for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). The extension will be from Aug. 4, 2024, to Feb. 3, 2025. There is also a redesignation, which means that those Haitians that were in the US as of June 3, 2024, and have continued to reside here continuously can apply for TPS for the first time. It is imperative the Council of the District of Columbia fully restore the 2/3rds of #AccesstoJustice funding that was slashed from the DC FY2025 budget. As shared in testimony before the Council by DC Affordable Law Firm’s Executive Director, Gabrielle “Gabby” Mulnick Majewski, here’s why access to justice is so crucial: “Access to justice funding means an intergenerational family of native Washingtonians are able to preserve a third-generation home against foreclosure and tax sale, because probate was a concept that no one explained to surviving children when their beloved parents or grandparents died. Access to justice means a woman dying of breast cancer is able to execute estate planning documents to preserve the safety of her children beyond her impending death and pass on her legacy. Access to justice means the ability for an immigrant teenager who walked thousands of miles on foot from South America to seek and secure physical and emotional safety and safe refuge in our proud Sanctuary City. Access to justice means that a parent can grieve while his lawyer navigates the tedious, arcane curvatures of probate laws to secure the digital photos that chronicled the life of his deceased young adult child. Access to justice means a domestic violence survivor having a lawyer by her side every step of the way throughout a child custody dispute spanning four years, securing the rightfully-owed child support and alimony enabling her to continue to raise her child in DC. ….This is what the access to justice program means, and this is why DC stands apart from many other cities as an inspiration and a beacon of what is possible when community members are valued as humans, and able to access the basic right to counsel that all Americans deserve.” If you are a DC resident or care about DC residents, join us. 🌟 Exploring Nonlawyer Providers to Enhance Access to Justice in DC 🌟 The DC Courts are considering proposals to allow trained nonlawyers to provide legal assistance for residents facing civil legal challenges, aligning with similar efforts in states. 🔍 Why This Matters: Access to Justice Gap: A staggering 75-97% of individuals in certain civil cases in DC do not have legal representation, often due to cost barriers and limited resources. Innovative Approaches: The DC Civil Legal Regulatory Reform Task Force is exploring proposals to use trained nonlawyers—like licensed paraprofessionals and community justice workers—to address urgent legal needs in housing, family law, and public benefits. Broader Landscape: Similar initiatives are underway in other states, including Texas, to enhance access to justice for underserved communities and improve overall court efficiency. 🗣️ Get Involved: The DC Task Force is seeking input through: Surveys: Online surveys for legal and social service professionals and community members are open until October 11. Monday, a U.S. federal court ruled that a Black-woman led venture capital firm's grant program supporting Black women was potentially discriminatory against non-Black people. Such initiatives combat systemic inequalities linked to homeownership, policing, health, wealth, and education disparities. Historically, civil rights attorneys have challenged discriminatory policies successfully, utilizing a critical legal theory -- #disparate #impact. This legal concept holds entities responsible for alleged unintentional discrimination, preventing the perpetuation of past and future injustices and safeguards civil and #constitutional rights. Yesterday, the NJ Attorney General's Office and NJ Division on Civil Rights introduced #disparate #impact #regulations aligning with state and federal anti-discrimination laws. AG Matthew J. Platkin emphasized that "policies need not have malicious intent to harm. In today's world, excuses like 'I meant well' no longer justify denying equal opportunities.
